What is Supportive Housing?

Permanent supportive housing is a range of supportive living arrangements that provide access to supportive services for individuals and families who can benefit from housing with these services. Permanent supportive housing has the primary purpose of assisting the individual or family to live independently in their community.

How is this housing funded and provided?

Supportive Housing is provided by For- and Non-profit developers. Supportive Housing is built as stand-alone developments or is contained within mixed-income residential developments. Funding for these units comes from the State of New Jersey through agencies including the NJHMFA, NJDCA, and federal agencies including HUD.

What is the need for supportive housing?

The need for supportive housing in New Jersey is significant. Factors such as homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, disabilities, and poverty contribute to the demand for supportive housing in the state. While figures vary, data from service providers and government agencies consistently indicate a substantial need for affordable and supportive housing options to address the needs of vulnerable populations across New Jersey. Efforts to expand supportive housing programs and resources are crucial in meeting the increasing demand and promoting housing stability and community well-being.
